Shostakovich – Suite for two pianos Op. 6
An ailing Debussy insisted this 1916 work was inspired purely by the sonorities of the piano, but few now believe the horrors of WWI didn’t play a part in it. Six years later, sixteen-year-old Shostakovich completed his first full-length work in response to the death of his father, hinting at the expressive style he was to return to in the 1930s and 40s.
