LAB RATS x Sonic Canvas: Ableton Live + Experimental Sound Design Presented by Sebastian Vivian

Presented in partnership with ILA’s creative community program, Lab Rats – Sonic Canvas is a series of hands-on workshops designed to explore experimental approaches to sound design, music production and live performance.

With a focus on electronic music and experimentation, these workshops are designed to develop practical production skills, whilst exploring less conventional techniques.

Presented by Sebastian Vivian, across 4 weeks, participants are introduced to a range of electronic music concepts through real world interactions before exploring further via Ableton Live.

Each session will provide a platform for participants to ask questions, test, collaborate and share ideas with a likeminded community of creatives.

*** Week 1 [Tues, August 6th]:

Chance in music production
Explore how randomness and chance can be a valuable tool in music creation and sound design.

*** Week 2 [Tues, August 13th]:

Sampling (with vinyl)
Learn the art of sampling and sound collage using vinyl records and deconstructed audio.

*** Week 3 [Tues, August 20th]:

Loops, Minimalism and Repetition
Explore concepts of looping through experimentations with loop cassettes and tape decks.

*** Week 4 [Wed, August 28th]:

Ai use in electronic music production

Understand how AI programs can be utilized to create assets for music production.

Whilst each workshop is designed to be standalone in nature, it is recommended participants register for all 4 events as each build on concepts discussed the week prior.

Doors Open = 5:00pm
Workshop = 5:30pm – 7:00 / 7:30pm
Close = 8:00pm

REQUIREMENTS: Laptop with Ableton (trial version is free) + headphones
OPTIONAL REQUIREMENTS: Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) / Midi controller

Thanks to a community partnership with Lumo SA, Lab Rats is ILA’s public program focused on creative tech, shared learning, and interdisciplinary collaboration as a series of workshops, artist presentations, networking sessions, and discussion panels.

With an emphasis on developing creative communities, Lab Rats fosters a network of emerging and established artists, providing opportunities for participants to upskill, reskill and learn new skills, build portfolios and make connections that expand creative and career prospects within the creative industry.

These workshops are interdisciplinary in nature, designed to expand participants production and performance skills and embrace alternative pathways to sound design.
